The Shinnecock Lodge was founded in Suffolk County Council on June 20, 1947. The lodge was assigned the number 360 by John C. Norsk, the National Secretary. During the summer of 1947 the Order of the Arrow functioned as a “Lodge” at camp. Although records are incomplete, letters state that a group of candidates was elected during summer camp.
At the time of our first recharter in January of 1948, it was noted that we had taken the formal name – Shinnecock Lodge #360 – and this was recorded at the National Office. In 1949 inquiries were made to the National Office regarding the use of a National insignia “pocket flap” by Harold A. Sparks, “Order of the Arrow Counselor” for Suffolk County Council. He was told that each Lodge has it’s own insignia and is expected to design one. The Lodge totem was to be worn on a neckerchief or pocket. Shinnecock’s original totem was the Buffalo.
In 1973, Ken Bloom, the Lodge Chief at that time, was elected Chief of the Lodge’s new Section, NE-3A. In 1979, after being elected Section Chief for 1976, 1977, and 1979, Jeff Hermann was elected National Chief of the Order of the Arrow. In 1981, Richard Aberle was elected Region Chief after having served as Section Chief for two years. The first Shinnecock Lodge Plan Book was introduced in 1983. In the mid 1980’s chapters were again formed to correspond with the current districts of the council.
At the beginning of 1997, these chapter were realigned to match the new districts of the Council. In September of the same year, Shinnecock hosted the Ne-2A Section Cnoclave before moving on to their current section of NE-2B. |
