Lowwanapeu Lodge #191 was born in 1991, after the consolidation of the Forest Lakes Council of Scranton and the Penn Mountains Council of Wilkes Barre. The name Lowwanapeu is a combination of the Lenape words for “North” and “East”, reflecting the name of the council. The number 191 is symbolic of the lodge’s birth date, January 1991. From its birth in 1991 until June 12, 2000 the lodge was a member of Section NE-4A. Lowwanapeu was proud to host its first conclave in the section in 1991 and its last conclave in the section in 2000. The theme of the 2000 conclave was “Many Arrows, One Light”. Both conclaves were held at Goose Pond Scout Reservation. The Lodge’s current totem, adopted in 1996, is the four colored Circle of Life with a fire in the center. The two lodges that merged to form Lowwanapeu were:
Accahela Lodge #223; Acahela was founded in 1942 at the council’s Camp Acahela at the converging of the Lehigh River and the Tobyhanna Creek. The Meaning of Acahela is “joining of the waters”. In 1969, the Hazelton area of the Anthracite Council and the Quekolis Lodge #316, joined the Wyoming Valley Council to form Penn Mountains Council and Gischigan lodge #223. Hazelton returned to Minsi Trails Council in 1985 and Acahela was again the lodge name.
Amad’ Ahi Lodge #542; in 1962 after the merger of the Mid Valley Council, Kiminschi Lodge 543 of Peckville, and the Dan Beard Council-Monsey Lodge #542 were formed. Amad’ Ahi means “forest waters” and the totem was two Indians in a canoe. |
